Spike Island Development Company is tasked with the day to day running of Spike Island, a heritage island set in Cork harbour.  The island is over 104 acres in size and has a rich and varied history.  The island operates a ticket office in Cobh, guided and self guided tours on the island, retail and cafe spaces, as well as evening tours, events, and facilitating stakeholders.  Our island maintenance team maintain the island and fortress, while our front line service is backed up by administration staff working in ticketing, customer service, accounts and reconcillation.

 ROLE – TOUR GUIDE:

The role involves guiding groups of people and sharing the history of the island.

Full training is provided.  Previous experience in a similar role, or customer facing position, is useful.

Outgoing, warm characters that enjoy dealing with people and engaging visitors are required. 

You may need to conduct several tours a day.  Guides must be fit and able to be on their feet for extended periods.

Guides must be able to project to large groups of people in an outdoor setting.

Shifts are typically between 10am -6pm – However, full flexibility to work evening events, tours and concerts as required is essential.

The roles may include up to full time work.  Hours can be discussed at interview and on acceptance of position.  

 

ROLE – KIOSK STAFF:

The role involves issuing tickets to visitors.

Retail stock is also sold.

Full training is provided.  Previous experience in a retail or ticket office role is advantageous.

Previous experience of cashing up, working with ticket or similar systems is also useful.

Friendly, outgoing staff are required.

Shifts are normally between 9am and 5pm, however, flexibility is required.  Hours can be agreed at interview stage.  Open 7 days a week.

 

CAFE – RETAIL STAFF:

The role involves selling stock to visitors.

Previous experience is useful, but training is provided.

Friendly and outgoing characters required.

The role requires cashing up and cleaning duties. 

Typical shifts between 10am and 6pm,but ability to work evenings and weekends to 11pm is essential.

 

General Staff Qualifications – all roles

1. Character: Each candidate must be of good character and the successful applicant will be subject to Garda Vetting prior to any appointment being confirmed.

2. Health: Each Candidate must be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. The role involves extensive walking.  

3. Education, Experience

Each candidate must:

(a) Have attained a good standard in general education

(b) Have an ability to deal with the public in an efficient and courteous manner and have good communication skills

(c) Relevant experience in customer service or guided tours is desirable for guiding roles, but not essential.  A failte Ireland tour guiding training badge is a recognised qualification.

(d) Experience with retail tills, ticketing systems and / or good computer literacy is highly beneficial for ticket office, retail or coffee shop roles.

 (e) A full driving license is desirable for guiding roles.

Particulars of Employment

Status

Roles are Temporary Seasonal. Up to full time work may be available, but most roles are envisaged to be part – time.  Contract may be terminated at any time subject to visitor demand. Subject to normal legal requirements.

 

Hours

The island operates 7 days a week.Shifts are typically between 10am and 6pm.However, the island operates events and evening work between 8am to 11pm, more often on weekends.Applicants must be able to work any shift up to these hours to be appointed. Weekly timesheets to be submitted to your supervisor. You will be required to work weekends, public holidays and evenings and be fully flexible to do so.

 

Salary

The initial wage is €11.35 hourly rate. The contract may be terminated at any time subject to normal legal requirements.

 

Probation:

The following provisions shall apply:- (a) there shall be a period after such appointments take effect, during which such persons shall hold office on probation; (b) The period of probation for staff is 6 weeks. Contracts may be terminated at any time during this period subject to normal legal requirements. Persons to whom an appointment is offered will be required to take up duty within a period of not more than one month and if they fail to take up the appointment within such period or such longer period as agreed, they shall not be appointed.

 

Location:

The base for working purposes shall be Spike Island and / or Cobh. Candidates must be able to be at their work location for the start of their allotted shifts.

 

Recruitment:

The recruitment selection process will include an interview. Selection shall be by means of a competition based on an interview. It may be decided, by reason of the number of persons seeking admission to the competition, to carry out a short listing procedure and admit to the competition only persons who appear to be likely to attain in the competition a standard sufficient for appointment. A panel may be formed on the basis of such interview. Candidates whose names are on a panel and who satisfy that they possess the qualifications declared for the office and that they are otherwise suitable for appointment may within the life of the panel be appointed as appropriate vacancies arise.
